Engine Oil
Has anyone used a Motor Medic Motor Flush right before an oil change. Is it worth the 5 bucks?
Also I'm wanting to use the Royal Purple High Mileage oil. It doesn't come in 5W-20 but it comes in 5W-30. Is it safe to change to the 5W-30? I have the 5.4 Engine. Thanks for any input. Here's a link to the motor flush.

Not sure about the motor flush. Maybe I'm old school but I think all the "fix in a bottle", fuel additives, etc. are just snake oil. Also I would go with Mobil one over Royal Purple any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
I would just change your oil like normal. I would be skeptical about those "fix in a bottle" type products. I change my oil every 4,000 miles with Castrol GTX high mileage 5W-30 synthetic blend (green bottle) with a Motorcraft filter and I've never had anything problems since I got my truck with 99k and now about to hit 121k. 5W-30 is just a bit thicker than 5W-20 and my truck runs fine.

No to the flush. No to the 5w30.
Use any name brand 5w20 oil and a Motorcraft filter and change it every 3000-5000 miles depending on driving conditions and your will not have any oil related engine issues.
Using an oil thicker than recommended could cause issues with the timing chain tensioners.
People spend way too much time worrying about oil (I used to also).
Use what the engine is spec'ed for any a quality filter, changing it regularly is all you need to do.
If you feel you engine is dirty, just do an short oil change interval.

Never had a leak, heads have never been off this engine. always used the Ford recommended oil which is the Synthetic Blend. This engine was first spec'ed for 5w 30w. In 2000 or 2001 Ford Motor updated spec to the 5w 20w Syn blend formulation. The update was retroactive back to the 97 model year.
Using quick flushes in the crank case. VERY BAD idea. Can have adverse affects that may even compromise the engine (blow it up). Problem being skinning the pump screen. A dirty engine can develop a skin inside the block cavity. Shocking the engine with chemical or harsher detergents may cause this skin to come off all at once, then make it's way to the pick-up tube pump screen, blocking oil flow, starving the engine.
The Spectral Analysis guys (of Engine Oil) recommend one product which is a slow clean of engine internals. That is AutoRX. It's the ONLY stuff I'm aware of that does indeed work...slowly.
You can also get a MotorVac Service at the dealership. That service cuts the carbon build up and is removed from the engine.

Sure you do, - your doing it right. That engine will last a good long time. As long as you don't over-fill it (lots of people do that, it's worse than running low) and maintenance the PCV system.
