Default Crank w/fuel at rail, no start

Strange symptoms started months ago but has reared its ugly head more frequently these days. I assumed it was 99% for sure a fuel pump and there is a chance it could be I suppose, but here is the skinny:

I replaced the fuel pump relay since it was simple. Fired up successfully about 27 times. Then crank, no start.
I pulled the PCM diode and reseated it. Fired up successfully about 30 times. Then crank, no start.
Most recently, I pulled both relay and diode thinking it was 'resetting' something. Crank, no start...checked fuel at the rail and it was there. All of a sudden it fired back up. Once started it seems to start fine until it sits for 12+ hours.

Any thoughts? Is there a fuel rail pressure sensor?

Is there a fuel rail pressure sensor?
No but the pressure is measured by an externally applied gauge.

Intermittent problems like that are usually a sign of a failing fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator.. You can get a fuel pressure gauge from an auto parts store at no cost by purchasing a loaner kit and getting a refund upon return.

Lots of videos available on how to conduct the tests.

Well, I had to drive it around for a few days while I figured it out
i could cycle the key and drive a few more blocks
3 fuel pumps later, I replaced the gas tank because it was so contaminated, it kept plugging socks and fuel filters

It would be worth confirming you have spark before you replace the fuel pump, IMO.

Sure as hell was
Inside of the gas tank looked like tar, and the gas coming out looked like the gas in that broken headlight
