converting auto to manual...
Hey there everyone I am interested in converting my e-150 to a manual transmission from an automatic.... what do I need in order to do this or is it even possible without a bunch of aftermarket parts...? it is 2 wheel drive by the way...
You also need to mentally prepare yourself, because it will feel like your truck has lost about 50 HP and 100 Lbs. of torque, when you switch to the auto. Performance will suffer in every possible way you can imagine. That's proven fact, and all the auto tranny owners can post whatever they want in response to my post, but saying it ain't so won't make it not true.

Its not a super easy job, but its not difficult. Just really time consuming. Get a buddy, 48 cans of beer, and a three day weekend and youre golden
I was about to waste my entire day wondering why anyone would ditch a manual for an auto. Seriously, my first thought was "why the "f" would anyone do that (switch a manual for an auto)? That's what I get for trying to read before I have my coffee after staying up all night partying.

Time for me to do brain surgery on a patient, have to go now.
LOL
that was funny... so what is the computer that I have to get all about...? I have converted an older chevy once before which wasn't hard in my opinion just time consuming so I have a pretty good idea what I am doing... my plan was to buy one from the local junk yard that is or was connected to a 5.4 already along with the clutch and pedal assembly and install... if that is it I may take a stab at it with my buddies lift...

I did it on a mid 90's Bronco and it was a pain in the ***. What it took was the 5 speed and bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate, and imput bearing, pedal assembly, crossmember and drive shaft and the transmission tunnel cover and shifter boot. I needed a starter but I'm not sure you'll need one. You'll also need the hydraulic clutch. I didn't change the computer and I doubt you need to. Going from a manual to a auto yes but not from a auto to manual. Your motor controls how your auto works by engine rpms's and vehicle speed. In any case a computer is $20 to $50 and at a bone yard. If you find the wires in the transmission harness for the back up lights and tip tie the rest you'll be good. I agree with one of the previous posts that you'll be pissed that you did it. I turned my bronco into a turd. So make sure you have the correct gearing or you'll have airplane gears. The 5 speed I used was a M50D from the same year bronco but I didn't take the rear gear ratio into account. Forget about chevy. Older chevy's are a dream to work on compared to a ford. Hell ford made a 351 cleveland, windsor and modified and didn't get one right.
