Chips are for diesels. Programmers are for gas vehicles. Best choice for you is edge or SCT

Programmer/Tuner is same thing which generally is a PCM reflash type device, plug into the OBII port of your truck, and it uploads a tune to the trucks computer.

Chips are usually flip chip type device which is used more generally on some diesels.

SCT and Edge are by far the two most popular brands for the F-150 trucks.

What year and engine are you looking to tune?

SCT Livewire ts, had mine for about 6 weeks and like it very much, although I am looking forward to getting some custom tunes. Franchi will sell you an sct and if your patient and keep checking on him you might get lucky and catch him offering a one day special. Buy it now and get the forum discount. ;-) Oh and Tackle, the bar b q kettle are the best.

Ive had my Edge Evo CS for about a week now. Been playing with the custom tune options to figure out what is best for each level.

I have a '98, which limited my options. Got a new old stock Edge Evo programmer for close to $400. No custom tune options, but the canned economy setting got rid of my lean codes (which were NOT vacuum related). So, with a 2001, you have more options available to you.
