Default Is That BAD?!

So when I shift from drive to reverse or vise versa and hammer on it my rear end makes a horrific pop as others have experienced on this site but i never found that they cured this problem even after a rear end rebuild....however tonight I discovered that you can grab my rear u-joint and the pinion has play in it, I can actually move it up and down and side to side. I recently did a pinion seal and put the nut on with an impact and put it too tight. my dad backed it off and set it to what felt right. other than the nut being too loose how bad could this problem be and should I just try tightening the pinion nut? I think the crush sleeve could be ruined by me in the first place but the rear end doesnt really make whining noises and only clunks when I hammer on it from a gear change. Anyone got any answers?

This in itself sounds like a bad idea...This is probably the root of your problem.

If you are going from drive to reverse and flooring it before the transmission has a chance to fully engage the transmission you are going to tear up several things in your drive chain like the transmission, u-joints, rear end. That is just a foolish thing to do and they never will have a fix for that kind of abuse to a vehicle.
My guess is that this is just a Trol question.

No matter who or what caused it, a loud noise from the rear end when shifting in any way or direction, even when flooring it, is not normal.
I had to take vehicle threat evasion training, and it involves all kinds of forward, reverse, turning, shifting, stomping the parking brake and turning the wheel, etc. at max throttle, and the Crown Vic they used never made any weird noises and that car is abused constantly.
I would agree with the Mad Canadian on the most likely problem.
Also, torque specs are there for a reason, and must be followed or new parts will fail.

no no no lol i didnt mean it like that, I meant it only clunks if I change the gear from forward to reverse or put alot of torque on the rear end, like I did it once when I held the truck against the converter, Im smarter than that to basically neutral drop it lol. anyway i tightened up the pinion nut today it had somehow came slightly loose and now the play is gone, I will eventually this week locktite the threads to avoid this again.

I'm thinking you were right when you said crush sleeve is ruined. If you over torqued it then back it off then it's shot. They are not reusable.
