Hey guys, been lurking on here for awhile and finally am gonna post. I don't wanna be the new guy who asks dumb questions, but hopefully you all can help.

About a month ago I fell into a 98 F150 XLT 4.6L with 135k miles. Besides the northeast rust, which I am planning on fixing soon (attempting to fix), the truck is in great shape.

Onto the problem: For the first few weeks the truck would squeak only when going in reverse, but now it is squeaking in drive too. It squeaks along with when I hit the gas. The squeaking is definitely coming from the rear. I am guessing it's a u-joint, but figured I would get some opinions first. Guy I got it from claims the u joints were done not too long ago. I will attach some videos of the noise when I get home.

does it squeak while drivin then go away as soon as you hit the brakes and slowly come back the more you slow down?

 

That about sums it up. I don't really hear it at higher speeds (say 40+), but once I let off the gas and hit the breaks to slow down it does come back. Once I can get the videos to upload you'll be able to hear it plain as day while I am coming up on a stop sign.

 

The guy could claim they were done not too long ago, but were they greased? Those needle bearings can wipe out very quickly if not greased properly.

 

also forgot to ask but does the speed of the squeakin increase/decrease with an increase/decrease in your speed? like when your movin slow the squeaks are longer and spaced more apart. if they are rpm related its more than likely u joints

 

Very true. Who knows when they were done or if done correctly.

When I am driving slower is when you can hear it. And the faster I go the quicker the squeak is. Hopefully I can get this video posted up in a sec. It's on my desktop and I've been having trouble with the internet connection.

Fairly certain it's a u-joint. Anyone have recommendations on which ones to buy? Or where to buy?
