4x4 problem
hey folks. 2003 f150 XLT 4x4
shifting transmission into neutral, and shifting into 4 high the truck SHAKES and VIBRATES like mad.
at low speed once i speed up a bit, it dissipates. until i slow down again.
same thing happens in 4-lo but not as bad not even half as bad
ive also recently noticed that upon putting the truck into drive or edging off of a red light i hear a metal on metal CLINK noise from i assume the transfer case to front differential drive shaft.
can anyone help me determine why the truck shakes so badly the mirrors are useless only in 4x4
and why it clinks like it does?
any advice is greatly appreciated

Clear up a couple of things for us here.... I assume you have SOTF (shift on the fly), meaning you have an electric t-case, and are doing this shifting while driving?
If so, 7700 is spot on - probably either a u-joint in the front D/S or the slip yoke. If that slip yoke is froze up, it can cause some things to happen as well.

it is electronic 4x4. I’ve read if the motor isn’t shifting the gear in fully for 4x4 it can chew the teeth off the jack shaft. I always stop fully. Put the truck in neutral and then select whatever 4x4 setting I need. Never do it while driving at any speed. I noticed when truck is parked I was under it and moving the front driveshaft it has a butt load of play left to right. As I’m moving it with my hand. Like you would to check a yolk for bad bearings. And you can hear it clink inside the front diff
