That is a car engine and has weak torque for a big heavy truck (Ford's brilliant idea to make more profits). It is even worse with the automatic transmission which only adds to the problem.
That's the problem, and nothing is going to change that except low gearing, and then you will have a high end problem if the gearing is too low.
The old 300 - 6 will blow your truck away from a standing start.
It's a good truck and a good engine, so enjoy it as it is.
The only real boost I know of for under $100.00 is a performance chip and that will not fix the lack of torque, which is your real problem.

You can get plenty of power out of a 4.6l, it's just not cheap. There's no such thing as cheap power.

chips are scams for dummys unless ur paying 400+ on a magic chip. thats not worth the lil boost 4.6 is a very good motor. the 4.6 in a cab or mustang is not the same motor. the torque is not the best but look how much u payed for ur truck?

best thing u can do is save your money ..get your truck re geared.or supercharger but thats alot of $$ but the best bang for your buck and u can see andd feel the power will be a programmer. i seen one for 160 on ebay.. dont waist your money on lil dum things that get u .1 hp at the end of the day u spend way more doing useless stuff. do the gottz mod that helps response and mpg and its dam near free lol hope this helps

programmers wont do crap my like a 10hp gain (maybe) get a gear jegs sells the 8:8 4.10 gear and install kit for like 300 then its about 300 to 400 to get installed that is the best bang for your dollar at this point. you can get a pully electric water pump bigger throttle body those will give you like 4-5 each but the best bet is a gear

The thing is none of the things you mentioned will do much without a programmer. By itself they're not all that great but mods like you said, I'd do electric fans wayyy before electric water pump btw.. need to be accompanied with a custom tune to get any real benefit from it. Also with a larger throttle body you need to port match the plenum or you're letting more air in to hit the smaller plenum and doing nothing. He's got 4x4 so regearing will cost more like $2k not $600... The front diff housing has to be pulled.

IMO your best bet is Gotts mod, E-fans and a tuner. Gotts is like $10. E-fans are like $200 with a Taurus 3.8 fan off ebay and DCC 2-speed controller. and a SCT X3 with custom tunes is $399 from VMP, that's where I got mine.

Coming from a guy with a 4.6 mustang I'll tell you, your not going to get much out of a 2v modular motor without some decent cams and port work. If you want power, the best ways to go are spray, a blower or a lot of money into the top end.

Bolt ons are a complete waste of money IMO, and a tune is pretty much good for nothing in the grand scheme of things unless you advance the timing...a lot. Even on my car I only got about 40 hp from full Boltons and a very aggressive tune. Even with all the power mods, gears still made the car feel fastest.

If your looking for better towing, I would just get a good stage 1 cam for more low end and some good low gears. Keep the pi intake as it's the best low end torque intake out for it really.

Good luck with it

"the 4.6 in a cab or mustang is not the same motor"

Actually it is exactly the same motor. The different motor is the 4.2 - 6 which was stroked for more torque. All the F150 engines from the years of these threads can get the job done for a truck, so I never understand what the problem is with the "poor performance" questions. I guess it depends on whether you want a truck or a street racer.

The intakes are different as well as many other things, but they don't matter as much as the intake.

As far as only getting 40hp from bolt ons I took it as that's all he's looking for, or less. I didn't think he was trying to achieve a 10 second lifted 4x4, He's just looking to get some pep. Everyone who said gears is the best way is right, except that like I said when regearing a 4x4 you're going to spend $1800-$2000 unless you do it yourself and only replace the gears.
