Default 1997 key/ignition problems

so i got a problem with this truck im working on it acts like the key is in it when its not. I can start it with just the plastic shroud and it makes the chime sound when the doors open but the cylinder isnt bad i checked it with a good one. and the steering wheel wont lock up either. Any ideas?

The tumblers are stuck. Time for a new lock cylinder, which is only about $20, and another $20 to have it keyed to match the doors. There is a small hole in the bottom column shroud. Turn the key to the on position, but dont start the car. Insert a pin into the hole and it will hit a pin in the cylinder, then the cylinder should slide right out.

im having the same problem with my 94.Except i replaced the tumbler and it still wont catch to attempt to start my truck.I originally replaced it because the key wouldnt turn my engine off but now that i put a brand new one in there, it doesnt do either.

I have seen that a lot on older Fords (and other trucks) with over 150,000 miles and the fix was always to replace the lock or lock/switch assembly. One truck I have driven has no key, you just turn the lock thing to start or shut off the engine as if the key was in it. Sure sounds like a worn out lock, but if you replaced it I don't know what could be causing that. Please be careful with wiring in the steering wheel, that airbag is dangerous.
I think you may have to take it to the dealer which is what I had to do with my Jeep that did the same thing. It was the lock, cost me $200.00 for parts and labor but it worked like new when I got it back.

I have the same problem as well...I usually stop the chime by shaking the steering wheel column, but it always comes back pretty quickly

That sounds like the ignition switch itself, not the lock.
They are not the same part.

well mine just started working for some wierd reason. but it sounds like your sensor for the key might of fallen out and is dangling beneith the shroud on the column
