Issue: Has your truck stalled while the yellow wrench light is on?

This seems to be quite a frequent problem in our community of F-150 owners. Read the discussion below to find out:

  • What is the cause of this issue?
  • How can it be solved?
  • How do you tell if your car is in “limp mode”?
  • How do you get the code read?
  • How much does it cost to fix at a dealer?

While in some cases this is caused by a dirty air filter, most of the time the consensus seems to be that it is an issue with a faulty throttle body that will need cleaning and/or replacement. Cleaning takes about 20-40 minutes (How-to found here) and taking it to the dealer will set you back anywhere from $200-$400. Since this component is also connected to the same system as the OBD port, you might want to check for wiring issues.

Read below to find out the root cause and solve the issue.

Default Wrench warning light

Hi I was driving the other day I have a 05 f-150 fx4 with 34,000 miles. I got off the highway stopped at a red light then tried to accelerate and the truck stalled out and the wrench yellow warning light came on. I pulled over, tried to start the engine and it started right back up. What could have caused this? Any comments? Thanks!

Engine stalled. Could be anything from dirty injectors to a dirty/faulty throttle body. Could also be as simple as a dirty air filter. If it happens again, start the troubleshooting process.

If the yellow "wrench" light stays on while the engine is running, you are in whats called the "limp home" mode. There is something wrong with the engine management system, and the engine runs, but with minimal performance (read "no power"). It's designed to get you out of traffic and home (or to the nearest repair center).

This happened to me in my 04 F150 5.6L last summer, then last week. Fortunately I wasn't on a highway as the truck did not go in "limp mode", just quit. From other websites, it's apparently the throttle body. I've filed a safety issue with NTSB. I'll take it to dealer tomorrow to get it checked. While in warranty last year, they couldn't find cause. Now that warranty is expired, I'll probably end up paying big $$$$!

mine just did it yesterday. luckily, i have an edge programmer and could pull the code right away.
Code # P2106 Throttle Actuator Control System- Forced Limited Power
Its a glorified way of saying the throttle body is fu**ed up. The code is gone now and its back to normal. Still trying to figure this one out.....

Have you tried cleaning the throttle body? It's about a 20-40 min job depending on how many tools you have........ All basic tools, not really what tolls you have but if you know where they are at.........

Default Wrench warning light

What do you do when this happens to you and the dealership can not find the problem. Wrench light has come on 3 times within past 4 months and gone in to limp model, 2006 Ford F150? Very frustrating, and dangerous when it quits
