Looking at about 1/2-inch difference from the converter being all the way in or not
We all live and learn.
Third time is a charm (as the saying goes) is correct.
It may have broken the front pump.
Hard job, (again) but pull it back out and inspect.

So I removed the transmission again to check the TC. It won't go back any further and has wobble and rattle.

I am not sure what it is supposed to look like but here it is.

Then with the trans sitting in the corner, the engine still would not turn.

I had a suspected oil leak anyway so I went ahead and replaced the oil pan and seal.

When I took the oil pan off, the oil was in bad shape. Here is a view from under the car looking up into the engine when I got the old oil pan off. Does this look like it was under too much heat?

Anyway, I got the new oil pan back on and some fresh oil in there. After letting it sit for a little while I was able to turn the engine from that front bolt a little bit (at least that is some progress). I am letting it sit for a while more and then will attempt to reassemble everything. I am now a little concerned that I will need to do some work on the engine sometime soon.

The converter looks like it is in there all the way.
You cannot get any or your fingers back behind the converter right?
The engine will be hard to turn over with all the spark plugs in it
When the trans is installed and the torque converter lined up and in there
That is when you are looking for the rattle, when you move the converter back and forth in the holes
It will rattle when moved back and forth, indicating that it is not bound up on the pump
Then you are good to go with tightening the converter nuts

Got everything back together and took it for a test drive. Unfortunately, it has the same behavior as it did before starting the repair. From take-off, it jerks into first and then wants to stay there. If I let my foot of the gas, it takes a good half second before it responds and then it jerks back out of first. From there, I might get it back going again or I might not, depending on the mood of the truck. The second stop, when I took my foot off the gas and put it on the break, it sounded like it was going to be out of gear and coast but them it jumped into first and put me in the middle of the intersection.

Not sure where to go from here. Everything that was broken has been replaced. All new solenoids etc.

Have you triple checked for proper fluid level?

Thumbs up

SHE RUNS!!!

After finishing up some other things I finally for back around to working on this. I was going to pull the trans out again and start over. Luckily the first thing I did was to unhook the cooler lines.

I noticed on of them had a bunch of gunk just inside. I did not even know I was supposed to check these lines but it make sense that all of that stuff from the friction plates burning up had to go someplace. Anyway, I cleaned them out, triple checked the fluid level(two times) and took her down the road.

It still shifts hard into and out of first but I assuming that's because of the new parts in there and it will get better after a while?

Yup. And the level varied but always stayed in the hash marks. I guess the level going up and down should have told me something. It's pretty level now after the above work. It's just in the bottom third of the hash marks.

Thank you everyone for your time and sharing your hard earned knowledge.
