This is what I think when most people say they are "under powered". I'm comparing stock to stock trucks. Now that I have put on bigger tires and a 2" level, I bought a tuner to compensate. Much better but still feels like I'm hauling a load of bricks around all the time. Just my opinion.
I did not understand a word of what you said, so your Ford is like a golf cart loaded with bricks? Or is the Titan better than Ford and Chevy on power.

Compared to new engines, the 5.4 is old and slow. But for its vintage it is average or better. Has good torque down low but dies at high rpms. Opposite of new 5.0....

I'm in the middle of said "project" myself lol my advice buy some beer invite some friends cause it ain't easy to break those concrete walls down! Even swinging a 10 pound sledge ya it busts through but the stuff suck to the studs is the real pita and the corners lol... As far as under powered ya I'd have to agree the truck has great low end but soon as hit 50 it's like where did it go I've got a 2.5 inches level and 33" tires everything else stock that I know of.

Ok, let me slow this down for you. The Titan is faster from a dead stop up to highway speeds. Chevy would be next. The Ford 5.4 is slow and sluggish. Go test drive a Titan or Chevy and find out for yourself. Please report back to us and explain your findings. Easy enough for you?

I've put 167k on my 04 Lariat. I've always termed it like this......"This is just a heavy azz truck". Well, the truck isn't any heavier than others.

It's just sluggish with the factory tune. The power is there, it just needs to be extracted.

Getting a tuner, just trying to decide which one.

Its important to differentiate the terminology you use. The 5.4 is anything but fast, in fact, its a slug. However, it has very impressive torque levels at this low RPMs as others have said. I've hauled 8k pounds on the highway with this thing and it pulls damn good, held its own against my buddy's cummins. with the same load.

Underpowered and slow are not the same thing.

This^^^

Put the 5.0 in the old 4R75E tranny and I would pick the 5.4 everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

The 5.0 puts out a negligible amount of more torque when you consider it comes in at about 500rpms higher than the 5.4

With my tuner it pulls like a train. The 5.0 is inherently a high winding motor because of its cam set up. A tune won't do much to bring a lot of low end torque. Drop some torquey cams in there and you might have a different story but then people would complain about it barely having more hp than the old 5.4

The 5.4 and 5.0 were built for different uses by ford IMO. The 3.5TT was made to replace the low end torque of the 5.4 and it quite frankly mops the floor with it. The 5.0 fits the go fast crowd and makes up for being a high revving motor by having the new 6-speed

I will have to agree with everyone on having a tuner to wake this motor up. I have and SCT X4 on mine and it feels way better over stock. I was also really shocked when I clocked a 16.9 @ 82 on the quarter mile. My truck is leveled and turning 35's with stock 3.73 gears. While not fast, it was quicker than I expected. The motors road manners on the other hand seem to also tie in with the fact that it lacks extra gears in the trans. It always seems to want to drop one too many gears and then it feels like it struggles.

I don't need you to slow it down, so re-read your first post and see where I am coming from, he was not asking about Dodge or Chevy or Toyota. And who is "us", this is a FORD forum. BILL2014 never asked if the truck was slow, only underpowered so ATNOLAN94 is correct.

My bad, you're right. Thanks for all the help. Keep posting your experience with that 4.6 in a 5.4 thread.
