Wasn't sure if this was a sending unit or what, so I figured I'd post and ask. It's under the spare tire mount.

it is your fuel pump module, it controls on/off fuel pump via ecu

Fuel pump driver module is the name for it (I believe)
They corrode and the internal electric components go bad
It has been a hard item to find (oem)
If it is cracked or corroding badly replace it before it goes bad

Yes, fuel pump driver module. RockAuto carries it now.

Rockauto.com carries the Dorman brand. Probably about 1/2 the price you will pay for oem part.

How many miles does someone usually get before they go bad or how old before replacing it?

It all depends, the original modules tend to rot out as they are a great collection point for road salt.
