Default Well hell.....

Couldnt hardly get out of bed this morning my back was hurting so bad (Back surgery a little over 10 years ago), went out to head to the doctor to get new meds, fired up the truck, heard a little pop, then the truck began shaking violently. CEL started blinking. Engine was reving up, then bogging down. Checked the codes, have P0303, P0340, and P0344. Looks like I'm getting to change cam phasers and plugs/COPs all at once... even better, cant do any of the work myself, so it will be going to a mechanic.

Had the same thing happen. I ended up with a new engine. I was warned by more than one shop that the phazer fix would only last so long, 1 year, 2 years, who knows, and then be righ back in for the same thing. Plus, it was half the price of the new engine and I got a 3 year warranty.

Truck has 53k on it. Mechanic called, timing chain guide broke. Hopefully that's all... $1600

Hopefully you had extended warranty on it, although an 8 year old truck, doubtful it is still covered...

Sorry to hear yours cratered out like that, I hope there is no other damage than a broken chain.

I just had my phaser noise start up in the last month and I have been told by five mechanics like azeus17 that doing a complete timing fix may or may not last. To get the parts and repair it or to get a remanufactered motor...

Well... mechanic just called me, replaced the guide, got it running, still has major knock. Ran diagnostics, has bent rod(s) on bank 1. Waiting on numbers Monday, but rough guess is about a $1600 difference between replacing head and replacing engine.

Question, if I do the heads/valves, I'm getting rid of the truck. If I do the engine, I'll more than likely keep it. What year engine can I get that will not have the cam phaser/spark plug/timing issues? '08?

really had to hit hard to bend a rod... they tell me these are Interference engines but i dont buy it at all... no valve relief in the piston tells me it never gets close... Ford says more than 2 teeth jumps and it hits... i again call BS... I got in a 5.4L with both chains jumps and a broken guide and tensioner... one chain jumped 4 teeth and the other jumped 3 and there was still a mile of room...

good luck to you man...I hate that they gouge 1600.00 for a job that can be done in a day...chain tensioner kit is 150.00 with chains, guides and tensioners and phasers are 150.00 each and all that can be changed in 6 hours time easily...
