Why didn't you just fix the problem before it blew? Seems like you knew there was an issue.

just started having issues 2 days ago. took it into the shop yesterday and repairs were going to run more than 2k. at that point why spend that much and still have 160k on the motor. spent twice as much and will have a motor with 0 miles and the FORD created problems nullified. figured while its in the shop go ahead and lift it too.

Default Big decision

Easy to drop 2 k on this engine if you are hiring it done . Same as saying I'll just have it changed to reman for twice as much .If you do it true, but if hired out a change out will be a lot more .
$3500 reman plus labor and all the gaskets etc. You are looking at $5500 to $6500.
Maybe a smart move depending on what was wrong and your mech abilities.
I must admit I would be looking at same engine but I would be at 280k and doing some of it myself . I would try to get iron tensioners and make sure I had oem phasors with a new melling oil pump . New vcts Oem type, and all new sensors . Probably a new intake manifold and maybe a new intake runner control .
So you see a lot of difference in what you get if you want 200k of future low trouble free maint.
Its like apples and Oranges .
I would really like to see whats wrong with this engine now or is it the typical "you need a new engine" .

Honestly 2K for the phaser repairs is cheap. Is the engine blown, or is it just having issues so you're replacing it now to start over fresh with mileage?

it was mainly timing related. chain slap. sounded like large rocks being rolled around in a washing machine. we pulled the valve covers and the VCT solenoids we in bad shape, the screen wen broken apart and we could find all the piesces either.... alot of oil varnish in the valve covers too which is odd because I have been running mobil 1 full syn since 58k. my neighbor came to the conclusion the VCT solenoids failed, causing oil circulation issues which then was a downward spiral.

Thats what i'm doing. the truck cosmetically is in great shape. the transmission was rebuilt 6 months ago. I can put some good money into it with a new motor and now lift it then I'm done. I have the truck I've always loved finished, paid for and here to last me a long time.
