Water pump longevity
5.4 3v.
What kind of longevity do we get out of these pumps? I prefer to replace “no-sail” items like water pumps before they become a problem considering the distances I drive, but just curious when the mean mileage failure occurs, if there is one. I’m a firm believer in regular fluid changes, coolant is no exception, and don’t let it go more than 4 years on any of my vehicles. The pump in my Olds is original 1976 and doing fine, I replaced the pump in my X3 at 100k (overly cautious I’ll readily admit) because it’s electric and doesn’t give any warnings before failing.
I pulled history codes and saw one for cylinder head temp, but no idea from when (do they get erased when unhooking the battery or PCM?). As per my digital coolant temp gauge, it’s never gotten hotter than 200* with a 195* thermostat, so I’m really not worried about it because I’ve never seen an active code for that, but it got me thinking about PM on the cooling system (SOP when with a Bavarian). I’ve got 155k on the truck with 2 trips NY-OBX and 1 more to FL this year and don’t like surprises. If WP failures are a rarity I’ll refrain, but if I’m nearing end-of-life on the thing I’ll stay ahead of it.

I replaced my water pump, (along with coolant and serpentine belt) preventatively when I did my timing job @ 212,000. Alternator is still going at 243,000. I don't mean to sound careless on maintenance. I change oil, filter and other expendables regularly. She still performs flawlessly.

I replaced my pump at about 160k. But, the only time the pump was a problem was during heavy towing or long periods of WOT. The pump wasn't an issue under normal daily driving.

Awesome, all promising. I’ll wait til 200k to preventively do it (unless required). Thanks guys.

Mines an FX4 (not sure if that came with one standard) and a stand alone trans cooler, I’ve never noticed higher than 146* even when towing through NY mountains (highest is 5k between payload and trailer) or through NYC where I’m not afraid to get on the gas and pass when needed, even with a trailer.
