well the reason i think it blew is i haul a 21 foot enclosed trailer full of quads to the desert a five hour haul uphill a big portion of the way i started noticing problems as soon as i did that and the motor had about 100 thousand miles on it but it held up well but it just took a crap one day

I hate to nag ya, but I tow a 5k lb boat from time to time in mine. That sounds like a pretty good haul that you are talking about. If it is a good uphill climb most of the way, was the super charger working most of the time? Is it possible with the added heat involved over extended period of time that it ruined the oil faster than normal and that was the root of the failure?

I guess without taking a sample and checking, it is basically guessing on your part about the root of the failure but i'm just trying to get your thoughts on it.

no you aren't bugging me but i dont know exactly how heavy the trailer was but it was the i 8 from San Diego to Yuma AZ and it is up hill both ways for real.. i really wont know the exact problem till i tear down the old motor but just be easy on it and yes my blower was working hard the whole way up the hill

Default 5.4 mod rebuild

OK, here's my 2 cents... I rebuilt my 5.4 in my 99 Expy I replaced
pistons- advanced- 28.00 (for the set!)
rods- Ebay new engine take outs(100.00)
Heads -with mustang gt cams 550.00
engine gaskets- advanced 160.00
all head/ rod/ main cap bolts--THEY ARE TORQUE TO YEILD, ONE TIEM USE)Ford 230.00
Rings- advance- 28.00
oil pump& screen- advanced 100.00
Crank kit- advanced-- 250.00 plus core
plugs/ oil/ filter/ trans fluid/ 70.00 autozone
hone tool (rented autozone)
block tanked 40.00
freeze plugs pressed in 25.00
pistons pressed on new rods 10.00 per rod
engine build manual 25.00
all in all after EVERYTHING was done I had less than 2500.00 in a rebuilt motor... only thing reused was the timing, and the block, I still get cap for reusing the timing, but the motor had 132XXX on it, and I could still see the xxxxx in the cyl walls, and the oil pressured timing tensioners were barely even out.

They say that you have to use special tools to hold the cams in place when doing the timing, but that isn't so... if you can find them, use them,, but if not.. you can get by.

so under 2500, and it runs like a scaled dog! You CAN build it.... and save some coin, get your other hop ups in the process... and get your 5.4 Mod motor wings, lol

How many miles?

Doesn't sound like a bad deal. Gives you a chance to build up your old motor while you have something to drive!

now, That's a blessing in disguise!

i was reading the thread, i noticed what you said about hearing air go by... ouch! i would think under conditions you described, on that trip with the trailer, the rings and rod bearings would bear the brunt of the load... maybe that's what happened. the way you describe it, that's what i'm thinking because it sounds like you experienced a loss of compression fairly quickly....

my two cents...
