I have this exact same noise in my 2006
That grinding clackity noise only happens under load or acceleration on mine. At first I thought exhaust rattle or similar but when I engaged the 4 Hi while driving, the noise quit. Then shortly after switching back to 2 WD it would start again. A few times when leaving from a stop a heard and felt a terrible clunk in front end and a brief pause and release like something froze and broke loose! I'm currently trying to check IWE's by jacking up each side. So far drivers side is performing normal.
Alright guys, I've been having a unknown noise coming from the front driver side. It sounds like a grinding noise to me. I took it to a shop and they told me "I have never in my life heard that". What could it be? Here's a video, any help will be appreciated. Unknown noise - YouTube

So I just finished jacking up each side and spun wheel with truck in 2 high with engine off and running. On the driver's side it spun the half axle and front drive shaft with engine off. With engine on neither spun. Moved to passenger side. When engine off both half shaft and front drive shaft spun. With engine running, the half shaft still spun but the front axle did not! Also there was no audible sound of vacuum release when I disconnected hose from either side with engine off. So what would you guys guess is the problem? Thanks!
but it sounds like you already narrowed it down to the passenger side so I would start there. Do the proper troubleshooting so you know where the issue lies.
It might be worth investing in a mity vac so you can apply vacuum at any point you wish to test and be able to read if and how much vacuum various components can hold. I.e. you can put the pump up by the solenoid on the firewall and make sure all the hoses down to the axles hold vacuum.

Unknown noise.
Faulty check valve or leaky hose would be my guess.

thank you 'needsmoarturbo' for the reply. I visually inspected what I could and don't see visual damage to lines. I will borrow a friends vac tester and see what we can figure out. I did notice while tracing each line, that both sides have line that bends out into engine compartment that are open and not connected to anything. I assumed that was a breather or vac release line since both sides had one.
If everything else checks out you can check with a short section of hose right at the iwe itself. There is a diaphragm in there, if it leaks the iwe will need to be replaced.
I think there's 2 check valves, one between the engine and the solenoid and one between the solenoid and the wheels before it tees.
