Default Transmission Replacement

My mechanic just told me my transmission is shot and needs to be replaced. He gave me an estimate for high 3k / low 4k.

My truck is and '07 with 93k miles.

What are you guys paying?

Nothing, as mine is not failing

There was a long running post on transmission failures; seemed to stall last week.

About 2 to 3K is the average going price for a replacement transmission. Were you quoted a new or rebuilt?

Bucko, there are NO new transmissions, only "remanufactured" (fancy way to say "rebuilt"), unless someone is slipping some out the back door at the manufacturer (Ford doesn't manufacture them).

Can anyone give me info on rebuilding vs. replacing with remanufactured transmission? Considerations? Cost differences?

Hmmm. My dealership (Lweisville Ford in the Dallas area) can get a NEW (not rebuilt/remanufactured) transmission. Not worth the price though.

I just had mine replaced by a local shop, they purchased the transmission from the dealer, the invoice said 2,250, total was $3,400 including replacing the input and output seals in the transfer case. I have a 3 year 36K mile warranty good at any Ford dealership. ( hopefully I will never need it) good luck

Ok, just got a 2nd opinion from my local ford dealer. They said the truck when hooked up to their computer is throwing codes for misfires on the #1 and #8 cylinder. They said they don't "think" it is the transmission. They recommend replacing all 8 coil packs and spark plugs. They are quoting me $1,600.

So, I have my local mechanic saying bad tranny - $3,300 for a Jasper and now a ford dealer saying spark plugs for $1,600.

Any advice on where to go from here?

none here that is a really tuff call. what did trans guy do to make his decision? drive it? I guess I would lean towards the computer rather than the butt dyno.
