Default Transmission issue

I'm new to this forum and had a few questions about my 05 F-150 5.4 V8 transmission. It's got 103,000 miles. I've had everything that could be serviced or replaced at or around the 100,000 mile mark done over the past year and half. Including a full transmission service from a local certified Ford dealer. I was driving it the other day and it had a very hard shift from 2 to 3 gear. Which then it started slipping in 3 gear. I immediately stopped and checked everything I could including the fluid and found everything looked fine. It worked and sounded fine in 1-2 gear but started slipping again in 3rd right after checking everything. Stopped again and had it towed to the same Ford dealer and they said it was damaged on the front end of the transmission. They informed me the transmission needed to be replaced or rebuild. $3,380 for a rebuild and $3,800 for a full replacement.

Question 1: Does that sound right or should I get a second opinion?
Question 2: If it needs to be replaced or rebuild is that price sound about right?
Question 3: Rebuild or replace? I want to see about getting a heavy duty rebuild on, if possible. Since a tow a 19" ultralite trail for camping/hunting during the summer and fall.
Thoughts
Thanks

Had mine replaced at the dealer under warranty at 41k miles. Would have been $3500.

At 100k miles, they probably didn't drop the pan and change the filter, but just reverse flushed it, which is what led to your issues. Did it drive right before that? If so, you may have a case.

dealer will cost more than a transmission shop. take techrep advice and have a transmission specialist give you an estimate. the guy i bought my truck from had the transmission rebuilt for $1600 in 2014. it was done by a family owned shop

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like your forward drum is cracked. To have it rebuilt right they will drop it, machine the 2\3 shift bore, sleeve it and do a full rebuild. Does it shift into 4th? If not it could be the retention ring on the shift servo. If you have been driving it for awhile like that the bore will need to be machined and sleeved. I did mine in August. Luckily a local shop has a fantastic owner who has done this many times. It only cost me $2100, with a tow included.

Transmission Man. He is in North Salt Lake or Woods Cross now. 801-467-6626 Ask for Ben. He is fast and has a good rating online.

The owner of the shop is a really good guy. I later found out that one of my customers at my work is his brother. He has been working on transmissions for close to 30 years. I haven't had any issues with mine at all, and the price did include a new torque converter.
