Default Tranny Limitations

Just curious as to how much power our transmissions can handle. Are the transmissions for the Roush, Saleen and Chip Foose trucks upgraded? I wouldn't imagine our little 4-speed transmissions to be that beefy, but I could be wrong. I know with Dodge Rams the stock 545RFE can barely handle the Hemi's torque and blow up when overheated. If one were to upgrade their truck with a supercharger or such, how much power can our stock tranny take before we have to rebuild it?

Unless I am mistaking, there is nothing special about the trannies in these trucks other than they are all special . The editions you mention and did not...Harley-Davidson with the Saleen blowers... are just appearance, exhaust, blower and cold air intake differences.

My truck was spec'd at 450HP and 500ft lb tq from the factory with the Saleen option.

Popular opinion is anything above 525hp will bake the lower end of the motor..but nothing is ever really metioned about the trans so unless your pushing more than that, I wouldnt worry.

But FYI...a bad tune can do all sorts of damage. AND keep up with all maintanance.

Blown ford can help answer this question, as far as a stock tranny and a supercharged engine.

If I can find his post on it, will post the link here.

This guy is saying 900HP. He only mentions the 4R70W but just for info, it should also apply to the 4R75E.

And he gives you a little more break down on what the module number means.

"The 4R70W is a fantastic trans. So why didnt ford offer it? It can handle upwards of 900 horse so durability cant be the reason."

"As you probably guessed I'm going with the 4R70W trans. The series means it has Four speeds, Rear wheel drive, torque capacity of 70 X 10 = 700 ft lb at the output of the torque converter, and a Wide ratio gear set."

Christ! What a beast! The 545RFE in my Ram 1500 is probably going to blow up before I reach 200,000km. And I'm keeping it stock just for that reason. I never knew that these transmissions can handle that much power. That's incredible.

On a side note, have you ever had issues with the Cam Phasers on your truck? That's something that scares the crap out of me. I would love to upgrade my truck with a supercharger down the road but the diesel tick makes me worry.

Agreed! I think it's cool just how diverse these transmissions can be application wise. Hell, by retired CVPI essentially has the same trans in it as my truck.

As for cam phasers, I may have lucked out but I am still holding my breath as the 04-06s seem to be the most problematic. I have read that some 07s and 08s have had similar issues but not near as many as the parts were already updated. Only time will tell I guess.

Just for fun...I have autotrader sending me instant alerts when new 07-08 Harley-Davidson trucks with the Saleen option are posted. Mainly so I can compare and smurk at whats out there but to see actual milage that some of these trucks are at. The highest milage 08 supercharged Harley I have come across was at 130k. Of course I do not know how well the truck has actually held up other than what can be seen via pictures and with the bs the sales guys put in.
