Default Tick/knock

Just bought an 05 fx4 and it has a tick

The guy I bought it from said that he put a new timing set on it and lock out cam phasers

What do y'all think it could be

it gets louder and softer like it's loud in park but if it's in gear at a stop it's pretty quiet

Thanks in advance for the help

Is there a good way to check that or just get in there and feel for the air

You could do that, or put a smoke machine on the tail pipe and smoke the exhaust and look for the leak that way. Thats how I troubleshoot them in the shop. Only problem is that my smoke machine is about a $900 tool, but maybe you have a buddy with access to one.

Is it really loud when you first crank it up cold then get quieter as it warms up? If so its probably exhaust manifold leaks. Mines doing the same thing. Gonna r&r both after the first of the year.

After listening to your video, it sounds like phaser knock.

That's more of a knock. Does not sound like an exhaust manifold leak

The guy I bought it from said he put lockout phasers in and I found a black spot around the exhaust manifold but it doesn't sound like an exhaust leak

My 08 sounds identical to that. I've been told by a couple different shops that it's the exhaust manifold

It's definitely got an exhaust leak
