Default "Strange" engine starting problem???

Hey guys, I Just bought a 2006 Ford F150 Fx4 5.4 3v V8 with 51,000 miles on it. My only problem that i seem to be having is this......Here is a scenario of what happens. I will pull into a gas station, or grocery store for a few min etc. turn the engine off, then come back outside to start the truck up. Well what happens is that when i turn the key to start the engine, the engine sort of starts but dies, then i have to turn the key again and the engine will start up and run fine. It only does this mabey a few times during the week, Im confused as to what this could possibly be? any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks, Gary

Classic signs if a dying starter. Ever do it from a cold start, or only when it's heated up?

My truck used to randomly do this. Swapped key and keyless entry with my spare set and has never done it again (knock on wood). Think it had something to do with anti-theft and the chip in the key. Just a thought.

I have the same issue too, but my truck does it once a month or so. One time it blew the PCV off (I think that is what it was). I should replace that part becuase it did not want to start until I reinstalled the part, so most likely the culprit. I will take a picture of the part and post it on here later this afternoon.

Might not be a bad idea to drop your spare tire and inspect the fuel pump drive module as razzle was referring to. Plenty of posts on here about them crapping out and causing wierd issues.

Starting with the cheapest/easiest;

1. Has the fuel filter been changed lately?
2. Has the throttle body ever been cleaned?
3. The FPDM, as stated.

...and the spare key (programming) wont be cheap! After you get it made you might want to make a couple more for yourself. Buy online, have them cut, then you can program them yourself. - You must have two in order to program them yourself.

clean the throttle body and she will run like a dream, take it off and actually spray it down, open the flange, and wipe it out, dont be afraid to use a whole can on it. and your fuel filter needs to be changed too if you never have before.

For the next week do this. When you get in to start your truck turn the key to on but not to start. (letting the fuel pump prime) Wait five seconds and start her up. If it doesn't happen or much less often it is probably fuel pump but that will only work for weeks or months. A cheap way to temp fix it is to bang your gas tank with a rubber hammer. Sometimes it jars something loose and it works again. Did that with my wifes blazer and it tan fine for another 50k until we sold it and from what I know is still running great.
