Default Starting issue

I have a 2006 f150 with the 5.4 and I have been having issues with it starting. Im not really sure how to describe the issue but every now and a again it will not start on the first start it hesitates and then it dies then once i try to start it again it starts up really fast. It happens maybe once or twice every other week or so in between it doing this it starts up fine and runs fine once it starts up. It isn't throwing any codes so I'm not sure where the problem is. Any help on this will be great.

thanks

Sounds to me like you are starting to have fuel problems. I'd say you are losing fuel pressure when the truck sets. If if was a constant problem you could cycle the key on and off a couple of times to let the fuel pump build pressure up and then start it. But with intermittent problem gonna be harder to figure out.

any way to check if it is the fuel pump or would that be something I would have to replace to find out if it is causing the problem?

It's not usually the pump. If happens more often it's pretty easy to check. I'm trying to think of the name of the part, but I'm thinking it's the fuel relay switch starts to go and allows the pressure to bleed off. All you have to do is grab a fuel pressure gauge and check check it up on the fuel rail. Pressure should hold steady. I'm not sure how long it's been since you changed your fuel filter but wouldn't hurt to do that. Filter is only about 10 bucks. IF it is a fuel issue they aren't that hard to diagnose but I wouldn't think pump. They aren't really a problem on these trucks. I'm sure one of the other guys will chime in and verify what I'm saying or with other ideas.

I didn't really have time today to replace the fuel filter but I will get to it next weekend. As with the fuel pressure it was between 40 and 41 during start up today and while driving it was between 38-39.5. The readings where coming from an edge programer, I have the stock tune on it right now, not sure how accurate they but that is all I could get today. Does that change anything or should I just keep an eye on those readings to see if anything changes?

Could be a sign of an old weakening battery, or corroded starter terminals.. Fuel filter never hurts to change, it only takes a minute to swap it out..

The battery was replaced not to long ago, about 6months ago, but i can check the starter terminals when I change the fuel filter

Are you saying it starts, runs, then hesitates and dies?
Or are you saying it won't fire from the first cold crank, but then fires right up with second try.
Warm starts are perfect with no drivability issues
???

more so on warm starts it does this. I can't think of a time that it has done it on a cold start. when it does it, it sounds like it starts but it dies then the second try it starts up faster than normal

Hmm..
Maybe a simple throttle body and MAF cleaning will do the trick..
