Unhappy Starter Issues...

guys I'm getting this intermittent issue where the starter starts but doesn't seem to engage the flywheel. It seems to be every 6-10 starts. To me it sounds like either the starter gear is not sticking out each time or maybe I have some missing teeth on the flywheel? I'm thinking the issue is more a starter problem because when it grinds and I stop and wait a second then try again it fires right up. Normally it wouldn't bother me but since I use this truck for pulling my camper long distance I do not want to be stranded.

Anybody else had this issue before?

Just looking for ideas to confirm before I start throwing parts at it.

I think you would have to remove it and look to see what's going on...

You are experiencing the typical starter failure syndrome. Have the battery-alternator tested and go from there.

Sounds like the bendix on the starter is sticking.

I had the opposite happen to me, my starter just quit working without any warning.

Starter solenoid is likely on its way out.

What Doug said. It's up to you if you want to rebuild it with a kit or buy a reman or new.

I bet its this.. ^

Try giving the starter a couple love taps and see if it clears it up for a while....

But I'd still be prepared to change it either way, being stranded with a no start condition sucks........
It could also be loose or corroded connections at the solenoid causing a weak start.

Thanks guys I'll check it out. How hard is it to rebuild myself? Or am I better off with a good reman with a warranty?

I would just get the reman.
