Default Spare Key

Bought the truck used. Only have one key & one remote. It has keyless entry so I'm not worried about locking my keys in my truck, but I am worried about losing my only key.

So am I going to have to go back to Ford to get a key that will crank my truck? Or am I fortunate enough to still have a dumb key?

Truck is a 2008 F150 XLT 4x4

Go to a local locksmith. Much cheaper than Ford. I had one made, and it took about 1/2 hour, and cost $75

I had the same problem with my 04. I had an extra key made by ford and all it did was unlock my truck so I had to take it back to the dealership to have it programed to start my truck. I think it cost $35 to have them program the key and give me my factory door code. The only way I found to not go to ford and have them do it is you need to have atleast two keys that start your truck to be able to program it yourself, atleast thats what I was told.

im on the same boat as you, Only have one key.

this is what I am planning to do
-Buy a PATS key on ebay(usually cheaper) and make a copy of it somewhere and then take it to the dealer to get it programmed. The key that is not programmed will open and close your doors but will not crank the motor.

The keys prevent someone from copying your key to a blank and using the blank. There is a small chip in the key which the vehicle must recognize before it will start.

if you only have 1 key your only option is the dealer to program it, if you have at least 2 keys that can start your truck then you can do it yourself.

I quess the prices vary based on where you live. I live in NYC and had the same issue. Called local Ford, and they told me $145 for the key and programing. Called local locksmith, $200. I was going to Pennsylvania for the weekend and decided to call one of the Ford Dealers in Scranton. He gave me a reasonable deal. I got 2 keys cut and programed, the keyless code pulled;all that for $85 including tax.

All you do to program the key is turn your key on and off a few times and hit it and it programs.. look it up.. my buddy gas a van key programmed to his 150.. no point in paying someone else to do it. It shouldn't be hard

You have to have two working keys to do that.

I know that, but if you only have 1 key you cant program another yourself

lets say you have 2 programmed keys and want to program a third one, then you can do it yourself.

Programming spare keys
A maximum of eight keys can be coded to your vehicle. Only
SecuriLock keys can be used. To program a coded key yourself, you
will need two previously programmed coded keys (keys that already
operate your vehicle’s engine) and the new unprogrammed key(s) readily
accessible for timely implementation of each step in the procedure.
If two previously programmed coded keys are not available, you must
bring your vehicle to your authorized dealer to have the spare coded
key(s) programmed.
Please read and understand the entire procedure before you begin.
1. Insert the first previously
programmed coded key into the
ignition and turn the ignition from
the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position to the 3
(ON) position (maintain ignition in
the 3 (ON) position for at least one
second, but no more than ten
seconds).
2. Turn ignition from the 3 (ON)
position back to the 1 (OFF/LOCK)
position in order to remove the first coded key from the ignition.
3. Within ten seconds of removing the first coded key, insert the second
previously programmed coded key into the ignition and turn the ignition
from the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position to the 3 (ON) position (maintain
ignition in the 3 (ON) position for at least one second but no more than
ten seconds).
4. Turn the ignition from the 3 (ON) position back to the 1 (OFF/LOCK)
position in order to remove the second coded key from the ignition.

5. Within 10 seconds of removing the second coded key, insert the new
unprogrammed key (new key/valet key) into the ignition and turn the
ignition from the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position to the 3 (ON) position
(maintain ignition in the 3 (ON) position for at least one second, but no
more than ten seconds). This step will program your new key to a coded
key.
6. To program additional new unprogrammed key(s), repeat Steps 1
through 5.
If successful, the new coded key(s) will start the vehicle’s engine and the
theft indicator will illuminate for three seconds and then go out.
If not successful, the new coded key(s) will not start the vehicle’s engine
