Depending on the intake and the year truck. Some of the early ones run lean from the factory and the intake will not help this condition. If you tune for the intake you will get the most benefit. This is for 5.4 engine, not sure about the 4.6. The AF1 3.5" intake shown in the pic definitly needs to be tuned for. I speak from experience.

I have heard with the AF1 you have to retune to use it, I don't know many details, but i'm sure it has something to do with the fact that they run lean.

It has to do with the MAF being in a slightly different potion and the mass of air traveling through the tube. It is a different diameter tube than stock so the computer needs to make a correction for the amount of intake air.

Custom tunes would have to be used to properly account for intakes. Every year and motor should have custom tuning to properly account for intakes. Not every year will run lean, but to get the most out of any key component mod tuning is needed.

You could use a plug and play, like edge or one of the ones that you can calibrate for an intake. A custom tune would be optimum though.

Edge cannot account for intakes. The "custom" user adjustable options in the Edge platform do NOT adjust a/f ratios or any trims.

You want a programmer. Chips do nothing on a PCM controlled motor. Start by reading the link below, and then go to PHP's forum for even more information. SCT and the Gryphon are the top programmers in the game.
