Not to sound like a noob but what is the difference between a 9.75 and 8.8 rear gear, and how can I tell which one I have?

Holy crap man, put some 3-tonne jack stands under your truck! Or at least use timberstrand 6x6 blocks instead. You're looking at getting into some serious accident with what you're doing.

All fords have a tag on the axle cover indicating ring gear size, gear ratio and type of carrier.
