Default push button start

so i want to sub out mu lighter for a push button start. why? because i cant leave well enough alone. anyway i want to use a relay. the way i see it this is how it should be wired(forgive the shoddy diagram)....

"switch side of relay"
ignition(key on position)---- \-------ignition

small starter wire------0-------small starter wire
"powered side of relay"

obviously using a 4 prong relay. something about this still doesnt seem quite right to me somehow, thats why i've come to you my fellow 150 lovers. let me know if im cool w/ this set up or what. thanx in advance for any help.

sorry i dont really understand your diagram, but i have a question. So will you still have the need to put the key in? If so then why use a button. I dont understand why a lot of newer cars have push button ignition but there is still a need to put a key/chip in the ignition (new bmws etc..). it doesnt save any amount of time and in reality its probabaly slower to put a key in, and then reach for the button. Now if you are doing away with using they key alltogether then that would be sweet. like my buddies maxima, the fob just has to be in your pocket to be able to start/ unlock.
Whatever way you are doing , goodluck and make sure to post pics.

Hook ignition power to 30 and 86, 85 to the push button (the other side of pushbutton to ground), top 87 to the starter wire.

I didn't understand what you were trying to do. That link should give you the information you need.

rtg143 i think you nailed they relay for me. what i want to do is pop in the key turn the power on and the reach over and push a button to fire the engine. when i crank the key all the way over ,like you do normally, i do not want the engine to fire. the only way to actually fire the engine should be the combination of key in the "on" position and pushing the start button "cig lighter". i just wanted to use a relay because it just seemed to be the only to do it the way i want. i dont want you to be able to just hop in push start without the keys. does that make sense. other than the "different factor" there really isnt a real reason to do it.

I think it's a little more than just that. Without the key in the on position, how would you engergize the ignition along with unlocking the wheel and shifter? Maybe I'm simplistic but except for being unique to your truck and maybe for anti-theft, I don't see any other advantages.

like i said in the beginning, there really is no fuctional reason for this mod. maybe if you need to sell the idea to your wife, anti theft is a reason, but for just for giggles and because im bored.

i think the relay diagram and the link combines are gonna be what i need. thanx a gain fellas.

The only problem with the relay design above is that when you actually turn the key to the start position it kills power to a lot of systems to allow the starter to get more juice. Not saying it won't work, just might need a bigger battery.

He'd be just bypassing the key circuit and not supplying power to crank, just trigger the starter solenoid.
