Default Purchasing a programmer

Was looking at getting a programmer. Did most of you buy them at a regular store, online from the manufacturer, or online from another place like summit, jegs, ect.

What are you looking for? Something with canned tunes or custom? There is plenty of info on this subject if you do a search.

IMO, the SCT X3 and Gryphon are the best on the market if you want custom tunes. If you just want something with canned tunes just get the Edge Evo.

Do your research before you buy and I strongly urge you to go the custom tune way.

I buy most my mods from internet sources.

I have a 2005 screw 05 4x4 with the 5.4 that was looking at doing a SIDO exhaust and the Gotts mod. i have read about these motors running lean stock and even worse with these mods.

You won't run lean with the Gotts mod. If you choose to go with aftermarket intake you might have issues which could be corrected with custom tunes. If that's all the mods you plan on doing the Edge Evo would work. A lot of guys run the Edge and like it. Personally, I would still go with the SCT or Gryphon with custom tunes. It all depends on what your expectations are. Your truck will always run better with custom tunes compared to canned. However, canned tunes are better then stock. I would also run a better intake. K&N, Airaid or Airforce One.

I bought my Edge Evolution used on ebay. Works fine.

My truck is 100% stock otherwise so I saw no need for a custom tune.

I'm not on the computer otherwise I'd post the link but...I started a thread a while in the For Sale section bout programmers. Ended up getting a great deal from THMotorsports, and it seems that everyone else is having the same luck too. Check it out- they are great at returning answers quickly...

Have fun like lots of others are creating threads about tuners.
Check the vendor showcase section.
I believe there is a group buy going on right now for the sct tuner with custom tunes;

read the whole thread to get the info you need!

Default Question about programmers

I have seen products like the SCT handheld programmer. I assume you plug it in, download the software and then put the programmer back in the garage. Why wouldn't people buy the programmer and then lend it others who can download the same software to multiple trucks? Am I missing something?
