Default Pulling a camper...

Hey guys I have a 2005 5.4 F150 FX4. I am going on a hunting trip in Kansas in November and will be pulling a 30ft camper from Arkansas that weighs about 6,500lbs. Do you think I will have any issues with this? I know my gas milage will go to crap, but do you think the truck will be ok? Have any of you ever pulled anything that heavy over a long distance? What issues should I be looking for? Thanks for the help!

The 5.4 will do just fine. I'll assume you have the factory "tow" package? If not, get an automatic transmission oil cooler installed. Make sure the tongue weight does not exceed that of the hitch you have installed.

I'm also assuming you have a hitch and not planning on using the bumper for the ball mount.

be sure to use a weight distributing hitch, get a brake controller if you dont already have one and it wouldnt hurt to have something that will display your trans temp so you can moniter that while towing. otherwise the truck will do just fine. i pull a 30 foot jayco with my 5.4 and it does great.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes I have a trailer hitch. I also have an edge evolution programmer so I can display the trans temp on it. Do I need to slow it down say...60-65 of should I be able to run 70 on the freeway?

you can do 70 but i normally keep it around 60-65 just to be safe and to save a little bit on mileage. also, in case you dont know already make sure you shut off your OD when you are towing that.

Even when you are up to speed? I knew to take it off when accelerating....

turning it off while accelerating has no affect on anything because your OD gear isnt used while accelerating. its while youre cruising that it needs to be off to keep the trans from shifting in and out of OD everytime you have to give it a little gas to get up a hill or whatever. its that shifting and gear hunting that overheats the trans.
