Default Power steering pump

So I've seen a lot of people have problem with the steering in our trucks, but I just bought mine less than a month ago and it was perfect bumper to bumper, but last week it seemed like at really low speeds my power steering pump is really weak, and when I'm stopped sometime I don't have power steering, also when I'm turned all the way the pump wines, now when I give the truck gas, the steering is normal... Seems to me that the pump is going out but not sure, I still have a warranty on her so I'm not doing the work anyway. Just curious to see if anyone else had this problem.

Usually the steering shaft goes bad before the pump, but based on the symptoms you describe it does seem like the pump is going bad. If its under warranty I would have it replaced.

How can I check the pump before I go out and spend 150 dollars on a new one?

If you're not sure take it to the shop. You are discribing a bad pump or a loose belt.

Ok so I finally took her into the shop, they are telling me it's a bad power steering pump and the high pressure hose is leaking, I never noticed the fluid being low and I checked it quite often. Anyway, according to them my warranty doesn't cover hoses because that is routine maintenance, which is pretty stupid, I've been working on cars for a while and never heard of servicing power steering hoses, whatever dumbasses... So then they tell me 400 bucks to put the hose on, and that's when I remembered why I work on my own vehicles. Needless to say I told them to do the warranty work and I told them where they could stick that 400 dollar hose. So next week I'm gonna put the hose on myself, found it on Partsgeek.com for 50 bucks, sounds much better. I've done some looking around on here and I guess our trucks are known for faulty pumps and high pressure hoses, who would have thunk it...

I'm gonna grab a Childers manual, never done a high pressure hose but I don't think it will be too bad

It's definitely not worth paying someone 400 dollars

My steering..2004 just seems to be going. Mine seems like it's the U-Joint not the pump but I'm not good at this. Good luck and please post your experience.
