Default Possible Cam Phaser issues

Alright been driving my truck now and realized a slight knock at idle. I didnt feel like worrying about it and my buddies dad says the motor is going, but I doubt it. I looked more into and found out it is in fact the Cam Phasers and that most of the 5.4's get this. Now is this a serious problem to worry about? Will it effect anything? I read that it can cost around 1800 to fix and I would really hate to drop that much coin on something at the moment. Any advice or tips would be great, thanks in advance.

Not sure about "most of the 5.4's get this" but when was the last time you changed the oil? What type of oil do you use? Do you use motorcraft filters?

Have you determined that this noise is not for an exhaust manifold?

How many miles on this truck?

Anywho, some people who actual have the phaser noise issue can get 10's of thousands of miles with the noise with no other issues or symptoms. But once you start getting CELs then you will want to look in to it and drop your coin.

CEL = Check Engine Light and can also be refered to as a MIL - Malfunction Indicator Light

A Code reader comes in handy at this point when you have either a CEL or a MIL.

Your truck calls for 5w-20 oil at 7 quarts. Use the Motorcraft FL-820s filter at all times. There are other exceptions but if Walmart carries it, you can find it.

You can go to a 5w-30 oil as many users have converted over with no issues. I run it on my truck as it was a Saleen requirement.

Change your oil immediatly. Check it for contaminents. If you really want to see how its been running, open the oil filter too.

Dealers/Lots do not always service used vehicles when they aquire them as trades or from auctions. And your not guarenteed that what you got was serviced as needed.

Same goes for trans, fuel filters and air filters.

Did you happen to get an Oasis (assuming you got it from a Ford dealer)?

Do you have a build date of the truck?

Heres a twist. I went out started the truck and revved it, climbed underneath to see where the noise was coming from and its like right next to the catalytic converter... Now the previous owner said the cats have been gutted could this be a possible solution to my problem? Ill upload the video or atleast try not sure how to really do it but ill try.

Thanks for posting the vid. I'd say do it right and get some after market hi-flow cats. Magnaflow is a good place to start. And they are legal.

Yes it most likely is.

One way to help to identify would be to take a rubber hose put your ear to one side and use the other end to sweep across the welds. Should be rather noticable when you come across it.

Keeps us informed on what you do.

Thanks.
