Default Ping noise during acceleration

I searched with no luck so here it goes. I have a 04 5.4 with 69k. I just bought it and notice it pings sometimes under acceleration. Anyone know what might cause this? I am using 87 octaine.

Try using a different brand gas or go to a higher octane just to see if it changes anything, I know some engines don't like ethanol blends and the valves can ping from that.

They are designed to operate completely normally on 87 octane fuel and I can say for a fact, I have never once heard a trace of ping from mine on 87 oct. no matter how hard it's run. You have knock sensor(s) that should detect it and adjust the timing accordingly to prevent pre-detonation. A scan gauge or "Scan Gauge II" should tell you what the timing is doing when that happens. Either the knock sensor isn't doing it's job or the PCM isn't doing it's job. My gut feeling is the PCM has had a brain fart and isn't compensating as it should.

Also check for:
Vacumm leaks, esp. around the intake manifold;
bad spark plug(s);
bad ignition coil(s);
problem with fuel system (usually bad injector(s)) or bad filter;
sometimes a clogged caty. converter can make your engine ping.

Go with the cheapest thing first and work your way up. I don't think it's the gas octane rating. Something is making your engine preignite on 87 octane fuel.

How much ping do you get? Just a second here and a second there or is it a continuous pop pop pop pop pop, especially when in a heavy acceleration or accelerating uphill (or whenever the engine has extra load on it).

Oh, forgot to mention: it could also be that your cam timing is not keeping up, but you should get codes if it was that. Or it could be a burnt valve. More than likely it is one of the easy things I mentioned above like bad coils.

Remove your coils and check the condition of the springs inside of the boots. If they are rusted then replace the boots and spray some dielectric grease inside before re-installing them.

But like I asked: exactly how much ping are you getting? This answer will help out a lot.

It only pings for a second and it is during acceleration. It does not last long and is not real frequent.
