Default overdrive shudder?

well ive searched but cant find an answer, i have a 04 xlt 5.4l with 96K miles and ive been noticing when im in overdrive and give it enough gas to make it shift out of overdrive it shudders its like it sticks between gears for a quick second, if i stomp the gas it shifts out fine, and it only does this coming out of overdrive, no problems going in. ive checked the fluid level and its fine, so im considering a fluid change, any suggestions? or has anyone had this problem? any help would be appriciated

i had the exact same issue on my 04 and i figured it was the trans getting tired so i pulled it and rebuilt and reseal it. when i pulled it down and pulled it apart i found on of the c clips on 3-4 solenoid had com apart not attaching the rod to the piston. it is a 35 cent clip and it can be replaced fairly easily if u are comfortable with auto transmissions. you will have to remove the pan and valve body and a snap ring. but it isn't too bad

My trans did that for about 20,000 miles in my 05. It ended up taking a crap at 92k. It was right about 40mph it would act confused. I've still got it sitting in my garage and I've thought about tearing into it and seeing WTF happened. I ended up losing 1,2, and Reverse.

My '04 just started doing that sort of thing, kind of. When cruising on the highway the other day, it started lagging a little, with a little shutter, like on a bumpy road, and a droning noise. It would go and come depending on where I was on the throttle. Turned OD off and it went away. Turned it back on and it came back in a matter of seconds after it shifted back into OD. Tranny was flushed about 30k miles ago (104k on the odo) and it is still good color and has no odor. Maybe the clip on this one too? Any other suggestions?

Mine did the exact same thing.....then it let go at about 110K, barely made it to the tranny shop, replaced it with new.

not to sound like an idiot here, but i would check your COP's. i had this happen on my 99 250 with the 5.4. the #4 COP was bad, and ran fine until i hit OD, then shuttered due to a misfire.

This is a good idea......Cheaper than a tranny thats for sure. I would think that you would get a code but it's worth a shot......GOOD CALL.

a bad COP wont always throw a code. in my case, it didnt. the COP worked fine until i hit OD, but if i gave it more throttle to downshift and take off, all was fine again until back in OD. my problem was the #4 COP, as it sat directly under the water hose for the heatercore. there was a factory splice in the hose right there, and all it takes is a small amount of coolant to drip into the valve cover and short the COP.

goodluck, and post back with your results !!!

Must be an 04 thing... Looks like the 04 I just picked will be having a new tranny put in by the dealer... Just dropped it off yesterday with this problem... The joys of buying used trucks... LoL

good idea i have the same issue now as well on my truck, but the issue here isn't when the truck is in over drive but shifting out of over drive, he is feeling the shudder between 4th going to 3rd on the down shift (please correct me if im wrong)

i just fixed a friends 04 today that had the same issue right at 100k and it was the same thing. im finding all of them ar going right at 100k ehh what ever lol.
