overdrive shudder?

its a cop. the dealer will be more than happy to "rebuild" your tranny for this problem. if your alternative is having the dealer charge you to look at your tranny gamble on 8 new cops (about $160) this is a common misfire that feels like a drivetrain problem

Eh... Total noob question... Other than changing tranny fluid, I am an idiot when it comes to tranny stuff. What is a COP?? My truck is in a shop now with the same problem... Wanna make sure it is fixed right before I decide to keep the truck...

COP stands for Coil On Plug. these engines have a wireless ignition system, so each cylinder has its own coil, which sits directly on top of the plug, and is held in place with a small screw. sometimes they can be tricky to remove, due to small clearances with other objects, like the fuel rail.
if you dont want to take a 160.00 gamble, then you can just pick up 1 spare coil, and swap it out and test. if it is still there, then swap a different one.
as i mentioned earlier, mine was under a water hose connection, so if you see any that look suspect on yours, i would start there.

if its not a COP ...prolly lock up torque convertor kickin in and out..alot of these fords do it... they make some additive to put in it ...thats supposed to cute it and it does... alot of the older police cars and grand marquis used to do this... i dont remember the name of it... also just changing the fluid and filter could fix this

Oh COP had nothing to do with the tranny... DUH! OK... Well mine got sent to a tranny shop... It was shuddering bad trying to downshift gently around 2K RPM... From what I have read, its prolly the T. Converter as mentioned above... Should find out today...

This shutter is a common ford tranny shutter. here is the best way to tell. Run the truck down the freeway or up a slight incline, slowly press the gas pedal down so that it shifts out of overdrive, if it shutters and feels like your running over those reflectors in the middle of the road, its the tranny. It will feel like your running over maybe 4-6 of them in quick succession. The tranny shop up here stocks all the parts to rebuild 2 or 3 of these cause they run into it all the time, I guess most ford Cop cars run the same tranny and they rebuild about 2 a month. I explained the feeling of the shutter and he started to laugh!!
Good luck.
