Overdrive problem question?
ok well just a couple of days ago i was driving my truck (details in sig)...and it started slipping real bad and not going anywhere....so i had shut the overdrive off and the truck drives perfectly....so after some research it seems to me that it may be an overdrive servo or overdrive band....the truck is at the shop right now getting checked out to see exactly what it is....
my question is if i drive the truck without the overdrive will that still be ok?
i know ill prob get **** MPG but other then that will it still drive? bc i dont know how much the tranny will be to fix it yet and if it is too much money then im going to have to hold off a little but until i do repair it to get the $$....any and all info would be great for me...average cost?

Driving it around town is o.k. I always switch my overdrive off when driving in town. I personally would not drive it on the highway with the OD off. At least not for long. The higher revs can't be good for the engine and trans.
Depends upon what's causing the problem. My TBird was shuttering at one time when going into OD. Trans Shop found a aluminum ring in there that failed and the pan was full of metal particles. OD on or off, pushing that much crap through the tranny isn't good and I had to have the tranny rebuilt.
yea i never really planned on driving the truck much....only local...i live in new york city so there really isnt much time for the OD to go on unless im taking highways....the tranny shop has the truck right now to see exactly what is wrong with it...after they drove it and road tested it...they said it shifts perfectly and drives like a dream w/ overdrive off...hoping no other issues other then what i think....then ill see if i can swing the $$ to get it fixed....ill keep ya posted as to what the issue is....seems to be that overdrive band that i keep reading is pretty common in our trucks....

well the shop took a look at it all...no error codes...no shavings or anything in the pan..they said the trans looks perfect from what they have seen...but clearly its not....next step would be to pull the trans apart....and that they want $900 to just drop it and look thru it...plus parts...so im really not sure what im gonna do yet....
I have one other idea here. The trans shop should be able to plug into the trans computer and see if it's throwing any issues up that aren't showing through the normal plug. I've seen that one where there was an intermittent short in the trans computer and wasn't showing on the main readout. Happened to have a sharp trans person to track that one down.

Wow, 900 for dropping the tranny and looking around sounds very high. How much do they charge an hour, 300?
I mean, they have to drop the driveshaft which is pretty quick and remove the oil pan. I guess if you have a 4x4 then they have to remove the transfer case first and I guess drop the tranny itself to get to the overdrive gearing, but that shouldn't take tooooo long, maybe 3 hrs. of constant work with a garage lift (but that depends on how corroded things are underneith the truck too).
Maybe get another quote? You now know that everything else seems OK inside of the tranny and that it is most likely the O/D gearing that is the issue, so I would get some more quotes.
When I had the tranny replaced in a '91 Crown Vic. that I used to have, it was 1100.00 for everything. Now, it did not have a transfer case to remove but still, 1100.00 for parts and labor and I think they said the tranny cost them 700.

I was pulling my trailer up a hill when all of a sudden the transmision sounded like it was in nutral. When I turned off the overdrive on the transmission everything worked perfectly. When I put it back into overdrive it was like being in nutral again. I have an 2005 f150 with 118,000 miles. What has happened to everyone with this problem? Big repair or small? Is it cheaper to replace transmission or have them look inside the one I have now? I don't want to spend a bunch of money just to have them say it needs replacing.
