To me that is good news. The meaning (to me) is that your P0022 and rough idle is the result af VCT solenoids (SPOOL VALVE) not "CLOSING" properly when the PCM commands them to 'CLOSE' (removes all duty cycle pulses). The PCM is 'requesting' no retard. But if the VCT spool valve fails to close completely and route ALL available oil pressure to the advance chambers in the phaser - it would remain retarded. Result would be P0022 or P0012 (Over-Retarded). Idling smoothly, then shutdown - should insure Phasers are at base timing - and spring loaded locking pin in place. Unplugging both VCTs in that state removes their ability to ever open - though you get a DTC concerning the VCT electrical fault.

The PCM knows variable timing is NOT working (with VCTs unplugged), and probably adjusts several parameters that effects power. I would not worry about that. Just replace VCTs. Actually I would replace BOTH as a matched set.

Yes I will replace both but wish I didn't have to spend 4hrs removing all the crap to remove covers, take 5 min if holes where bigger. That was one bad thought of from Ford. Driver side not bad but pass side omg. Last time I bought the Vct the seal was the wrong one, I will look into the 04 covers as was suggested. But hope I have new truck or newer before I need to deal with this again.....what would be the best truck out there gas or diesel from 2000 on...must be a 2500 and not a slug on fuel. No 6l no no no lol thx
