how do i know if my truck has a standard or metric oil filter

It helps if you include your engine type/size, year, and any modifications that may impact the answer.

Assuming you have a 5.4, just use the oil filter that's recommended in your owners manual.

yes i am talking about the threads for the filter ill have to check my manual. and yes its a 5.4

the question is why do you need to know? just get the correct oil filter size. the threads will be correct.

I thought the only engine with thread differences was the 4.6? I went with the Motorcraft FL820S, and it spun right on. On our old '08 XLT with the 4.6, we had the metric.
