No Reverse...
So I was backing into my driveway, slight incline short driveway.
Something goes bam and I lose reverse gear, I can hear it engage, just slips.
177,400 miles, 4.6L SuperCrew XLT, auto trans.
Dropped it off at local trans shop this evening.
What do yall think it's going to be?

Sounds like a rebuild is in your future, although I'm not a psychic.
It is a very common failure and there are several components that can fail and cause this symptom. Unfortunately, most tranny shops are most likely to suggest a rebuild even if it is .....let's just say the Retaining ring on the reverse servo broke. It could be a 2buck part to fix the problem, or if one of the major components has failed, then a rebuild would be the best course of action.
Iv got a co-worker who's reverse has been out for three years, his truck has more codes than Webster could define and he drives it every day. Kinda funny but he' can see a slope in the ground that the average person would never notice and he rolls backwards into his parking spot every day!
I do know the 44r-75e in particular has a weak reverse gear. The shop that rebuilt mine told me that I should try and avoid backing a trailer up a hill for Instance to prevent premature wear or failure.
That said, it's odd bc I used to back my tandem axle covered trailer loaded with tools up a steep hill into my yard 5 days a week at my old house and would back my boat up it probably 3-4 times a month and my reverse never failed even b4 the rebuild so, I dont know how legit the statement is but their logic made sense enough to me that I'm at least conscientious about backing up with a heavy trailer now.
Good luck and hope it works out for the best!

Broken reverse band. With 177,000 on it I said go ahead and do a full rebuild, he's throwing in a torque converter!
He said he could just do the reverse band but labor is about the same as the rebuild.
$2800.

Mine was 1800 with a 2 year warranty and a rebuilt torque converter. I'm in Georgia
Mines did the same, normal driving then went to back up a nothing…I could hear it shifting into reverse but just getting engine rev. Forward driving is normal but just no reverse..I did see the wench come one but didn’t stay on

Having gone though this myself about a year ago, the cost is close to what I was quoted. The cost I was quoted included a complete rebuild with all new components and a 3yr warranty. I went with a reman tranny, that failed at the 9 month mark but was warrantied
The cost alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Too many variables to take in to account
