Need help please!
I hope this is right place to post . Sorry if it is not in advance. I inherited a 2004 F150 lariat p/u 4 door 5.4L Triton. ( floor shifter). This past summer 2022. it has only 66000 miles . It has been serviced every year and garage kept from 2008( when gas prices skyrocketed due to failing banks) until summer of 2022. It drives great with one exception, I went to the store and the parking lot was pretty flat. ( There is no steep areas in flat San Antonio or Sugar land Texas) I walked out of store and my truck is in the middle of parking lot. It rolled back. The truck changes all gears just fine. With the exception of park. It will not go into park.. Any suggestions are welcome. Anyone else have this problem?

1) Can you move the shifter into Park position but parking paw (inside transmission) does not engage (meaning no positive restrain on movement of truck)?
2) Are you saying the shifter will not move to the Park position?

Yeah...what they said. IF it won't go into park at all, how long has it been this way? Seems like this vehicle has been known to you/your family for a long time so...what's the story? IF it goes into 'Park' but the truck still rolls, it could be the little parking 'pawl' is broken...those things are incredibly small in reality.
I would suggest chocking the wheels and using the park brake and crawling under it to look at the shift cable bushing where it attaches to the trans. If this is really sloppy maybe it's just not shifting all the way into park.

You will need a new shifter most likely
There is a cable adjustment at the trans end of the cable
If real lucky that will take care of it
I have had to replace a couple of those shifters already
Jack the rear axle up, and put it on jackstands
Disconnect the shift cable (trans end) with a big screwdriver / prybar and check for the full range of shifter motion
Check the trans shift points (detents) and Park / Neutral at the same time
Good luck

I've had to replace the plastic bushing at both ends of the floor shift cable due to shifting problems. When inspected it was clear each time that the bushing was worn out. I used a replacement bushing from the Dorman 14057 package of bushings each time.
Here's where I posted and then purchased the Dorman bushing for the end of the shift cable: https://www.f150forum.com/f4/transmi...-cable-533157/
