So I'm new to owning a F150. I'm strapped on cash but want the truck to be a little louder. If I take off the muffler would it cause any mechanical issues? Thanks in advanced.

 

It wont cause any mechanical issues but if you just cut the muffler off and don't put something like a piece of pipe back in its place you could run the risk of exhaust fumes coming into the cab of the truck and then doing bad things to your body. I got my truck straight piped for like $60 at a local exhaust shop so I would still consider that pretty cheap.

 

No, it won't cause any mechanical issues, but I would recommend putting on a 45 degree elbow wherever you cut your pipe at to direct the exhaust flow either to the side of the truck, or the road. I cut my muffler off of mine and never did anything with the existing pipe which is still there. However, I now have a lot of black carbon build up underneath after 2 years of driving it like that.

 

Just put a length of pipe in place of the muffler and all will be well.

 

Will it be really loud? To the point where I would regret doing it?

 

It will be loud, so it depends on your definition of "will I regret it" loud.

I see two options:

1) Cut out the stock muffler, and weld in a straight pipe to prevent exhaust into the cab.

2) Have the stock muffler replaced with a nice sounding turbo type muffler.

I vote option #2. Should you go with option#1, you could always install a muffler later, but at added expense, as you'd have paid for welding in a straight pipe, and now removing it to install a muffler.

 

I did it the same way... I cut off the original muffler and welded a peace of straight pipe in, so the new muffler (Flowmaster Super 44) and the new pipe are the same length as the stock one.
Works fine and no issues...

 

I have my play truck (77 k5) it has long tube headers and a "race muffler" that is loud. I couldn't drive it for a 2hrs trip and not want to jump out haha.

 

I did this over the summer with the help of a local muffler shop to my 2013 F150 and they welded in a nice piece of pipe in its place. I am so happy I saved money over an aftermarket system and went this route. The shop owner kind of thought I was nuts for doing this with a newer truck but when I went to pick it up, he even admitted to me that he was very pleased with the sound for such an easy change.

 

I have an 04 FX4 Screw and was thinking of having my shop install a couple of Flowmasters in place of the stock mufflers. Is there anything I should be concerned about?
