Mounting a scanner
I have a 2005 XLT Scab with a column shift. Now underneath of my ashtray is like this little pocket thing which really doesn't seem to serve a purpose. You can't really fit anything in there, except maybe a pen or two but they would constantly fall out. Anyway, my plans are to cut a hole in the back of the pocket and mount a scanner inside there. Now my question, Is there anything back behind there that I need to be concerned about? I remember reading something on here about that column being pretty much hollow, but I just wanted to confirm before I go drilling and cutting. TIA.
Here, i can show you what's behind that. It should be practically hollow. Ill take some pics and show you how to open up your faceplate. It's VERY easy. Just look for the edit of this post in a bit.

The 3rd pic i pulled online- it was too dark to see inside the space. If you notice the wires look like it takes up alot of space- it really doesnt. MY wires are all bundled up nicely because i previously had an amp placed in my dash for when I had my pansy 10" subs lol. YES there is that much space if you tape up your wires together neatly.
Just get up in there and check first before doing anything. Dont want to make any UH-OH's or OMFG's.
You could easily mount a scanner in there bro.

Jotto used to make a specific console..
I have one, and have a few left over...
They're 200$....let me know what kind of scanner it is and i'll include the proper face plate....
No drilling/hacking/anything else.. replaces the 'mat' on the dash.....Installs in bout 5 mins....

to the OP........ i was going to mount my scanner down there the other day... but i have like a little antenna.. that just clips on the back... i was affriad i would get any reception... i guess i need to get an outside antenna and cable..
i just drilling a small hole in that top dash mount to run the power wire and hard wired mine.. and it stays in that little pad on top pretty well... would like have to have it down low... but would prolly need a external speaker too!
