Default Mercon V vs. ???

Ok... I did a forum search and couldn't locate anything so I thought I'd post.

Current Setup:
S&B CAI
Granatelli COPs
Troyer eFans
Troyer Underdrives
Banks Torque Tubes
Banks Monster Exhaust

I have the Gryphon tuner but only have the canned tunes as I'm waiting on custom tunes to be written.

I've order and received the Troyer Valve Body upgrade for the 4R75W transmission and was wondering...

Is there a better ATF to run than the Mercon V? If I'm going to drop 10qts (according to Troyer they say purchase 8 - 10 qts to fill tranny back up after swap) out of 14qts, I think this would be a good time to make the change... if possible.

Anyone running anything other than the Mercon V in their 2004-2008 F150?
If so, what are your results, thoughts and opinions?
Also, anyone recommend the +2qts added capacity pan? Is there a benefit adding 2qts to 14qts? (about a 15% increase in capacity)

If so, how do I get the last 4qts out of the transmission? Is there a pump/vacuum procedure?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

When I dropped my pan to switch the filter it only held 7 qts.

I have ask this question at 2 different shops. National Speed in Wilmington and Fast Lane Motorsports in Benson. Both have strongly reccomended the Mercon V. When I carry the truck up to Mike Troyer in a few weeks I'm going to talk to him about it as well.

I asked Troyer when I purchased the valve body... their recommendation was Mercon V too.

Just thought I'd post and get the opinion of the collective.

Thats good to hear...I was really surprised when National Speed said Mercon V, seeing as there shelves were stocked with fluids from other companies. One of the guys there said that the Mercon V is actually one of the best tranny fluids on the market.

How do you like the valve body? Was it worth the money? What changes did you notice if any?

I postponed the installation because I decided to keep stock tranny pan but ordered a drain plug kit from Jegs. That way, I can change fluid out easier next time instead of the extremely messy drop-pan method. Parts should be here in a couple of days.

I also decided to stay with stock pan. Here's my thoughts...

+2qts to 14 (actually 13.8qt capacity) only increases volume by roughly 15%. Added capacity doesn't increase cooling or decrease temp. It just takes longer to heat up 16qts than it does 14qts. Where that is applicable is a sprint or drag type situation. The added capacity provides a longer heat-up time.

I don't plan on many... or repetitive... sprint/drag situations so the added capacity wouldn't be a benefit and I would only be adding extra $ in terms of fluid and purchasing a $200 - $300 pan.

As soon as I get the install done (w/ pictures) I'll post a thread showing install and results.

The only way to get the remaining fluid out of the torque converter is to use a flush machine, as there is no drain plug on the torque converter. I don't know why manufacturers stopped installing drain plugs in the torque converters. Seems they make it difficult to expel all the fluid from an automatic transmission these days.

Thats why they did it. To many guys like us changing our own fluid. Now you gotta spend over a $100 to let them do it.
