Default Lost Overdrive in trans this weekend

Hey everyone, hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving.

I have a 2004 F150 Lariat with 83K miles in great shape or so I thought. Out driving this weekend the transmission shifts into OD and goes into neutral, no noise, nothing. I can cancel OD and it shifts through the gears just fine. In reading the posts so far I see that it can be a broken OD solenoid snap ring, broken OD band or time for a new transmission. Sorry but is this the best Ford can do? A new transmission at 83K? I have had the truck two years and love driving it but between the crappy plug replacement situation, which may cost up to a grand to replace the plugs and now this problem with the transmission, I will not be owning a Ford much longer.

Sorry to vent here but I expect a little better than this from our auto manufacturers.

Kind of makes you wonder how it was driven in the first four years.

I see you are a new member; welcome aboard. Both of your situations are common problems our 04 to 08's are prone to.

I might ask though if your transmission ever had any preventative maintenence, such as full oil/flush maintenance? This is required for long service automatics. Many ignore this maintenance on their transmissions.

Just returned from the dealership and the transmission is toast! $3558.87 for a new trans, which does include a 3yr, unlimited miles warranty. The warranty is the only bright spot in this whole situation.

I went ahead and had them do the plugs also Stealth, $553.12 plus $55.00 for any broken plug out of the 8. They now recommend doing the plugs at 60k miles just because of the lousy design with the heads/plugs and the problems it causes long term with these motors.

All in all some $4400.00 dollars in repairs 4 weeks before Christmas! My Christmas budget just got a whole lot thinner.

Hey Bucko, the dealership where I bought the truck had gone through it and done a trans service and oil change prior to me buying it. I have put another 7 thousand miles on it since then and have not towed anything so at this point I just have to say I bought it used with 76K miles and really have no history on it other than the clean Carfax.

Thanks for the input

im not saying they r wrong, but i had a dealer tell me my engine was toast and needed replacing, brought it to a real mechanic and it turned out to be a blocked catalytic converter, sometimes a second opinion is worth a shot, by the way here in canada u can rebuild a tranny with high performance stuff for 1700$ im assuming it should be even cheaper in ur end cause in quebec we get screwed on everything

Guy at work had a '04 Scab XLT 5.4, with the same problem. He replaced the retainer ring himself to no avail. Took it to Ford, they said time for a new tranny. He didn't believe them, took it to a local tranny shop, they had it fixed within a hour. $200 bucks for ford to spray off the mud, and check fluid levels. $150 bucks for the local shop to fix it. Turns out, some little spring in the valve body came loose and suffocated the O/D. He was sure a happy camper when the shop called. Then he called Ford back and gave them sh*t for trying to get 2300 bucks out of him,
