Default Key issue

Bought a 2006 screw, love it but...

Only received one key. It unlocks the doors and starts the truck, but DOES NOT lock / unlock the tailgate, or remove the lock that I assume releases the spare tire crank.

I would have never guessed that the truck new would come with two different keys, but also can't imagine someone replaced the either both the tailgate / spare locks, or the door / ignition... what the heck???

Do both your keys open everything for you?

Does the key go into the spare tire lock? The ign key is supposed to work. My truck lock was rusted to the back of the bumper and the key would not turn. You should be able to get under and spray penetrating oil or tap it to get it to budge. The back of the lock has 2 wimpy metal tabs so it will be easy to mangle. I had a hard time getting it back together once I got it out.

OK, this is embarrassing...

After posting the above, it made me think how it made no sense, so went out to garage and tried again.

Had to turn real hard almost afraid of breaking key, but it finally turned both ways to lock and unlock. Still can't turn the spare release, will try some WD40 but out right now. How does that work, is it a 1/4 turn unlock, or does it screw out? Just like to know how it works before forcing it...especially with only one key for right now.

I got it to turn a little, but not even 90 degrees. Does it just need to turn 90 and pull out?

Default key

I got two keys when I bought my truck. Something happened to the first one, so I went to use the second but the truck didnt start. I ended up having to go back to the dealership and getting it synced with the truck. If I were you, I would go and get another fully functional spare. The answer is yes, the same key is used for all the keyholes. I keep my spare "chipped" key at home, and a copied one tied up under the truck in case I lock myself out. If someone finds it somehow, the worst that could happen is they get my stuff inside, but I keep the truck. The lock for the spare tire just turns 90 degrees and slides out - I suggest getting it to happen before it becomes a necessity. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Thanks guys... Yea, I definitely want a second key, makes me nervous only having the one. And I will get that spare tire lock off soon no matter what it takes....I will be beyond "irritated" if I get a flat and can't get to the spare.

just a 90 turn. Our awesome winter road salt takes a toll. Get behind the bumper and spray/ tap the wings behind the lock.

Got the spare lock off, doused it with lube for future use. The tire cranked down just fine, topped off the air while accessible.

Also had a spare key made, was surprised could get a "chip" key at local Ace Hardware.....didn't know they could do that nowadays. Never needed a replacement chip key before, and glad of it... cost $70! Ouch!

did you get a reach around while they were screwing you?

Retail cost at my dealer's parts counter for a cut PATS key is 25 dollars plus tax. I get them for 20 bucks cut because I have a commercial account for the body shop.

I have found that some aftermarket PATS keys don't work with my 06 F 150, 0r my 08 Escape. If the key isn't marked with a S on the key it won't work, and the locksmiths book had the blank listed for the vehicles, and we cut 2 different keys and neither worked.

Default Spare Tire Lock

Read many stories about the spare tire lock on the rear bumper. I was cleaning my truck and noticed a bunch of dirt under the rear bumper plastic cover. I then noticed the bumper itself has an unbelievable amount of rust on it, and its starting to creep around to the chrome. I started to take the rear bumper off and the spare tire losk was totally seized up. Even after penetrating oil on the back and in the key hole it would not budge. I then decided to use the key and simultaneously turn the 'wings' holding it on with a pair of pliers. I got it off when the cheap metal of the wings crumbled away and the losk still won't turn. Now I have to figure out how to get a replacement lock that my single key will work on, I guess I'll have to go through the dealer to get a matching lock.

I'm going to remove the bumper and then sand the back free of rust and paint it with rust oleum or something similar to try to delay the ineveitable. I live in Western PA, and dirt and salt from the roads are part of my daily driving about 4-6 months of the year. I'm glad I did this before I needed to get the spare down on a dark highway somewhere without all of the tools I have in my garage. Its a terrible but common system. My brother-in-law has a silverado, with the exact same sytem, we did have to change his tire on a hunting trip about 500 miles from home, fortunately his truck lock worked fine.
