Default IWE moisture

Can anyone pinpoint how moisture gets into the IWE's? I just replaced both again, it's been less than 2 years since last replacement. I have the solenoid with the rain shield so that shouldn't be a problem. Vacuum lines all apprear to be in good shape etc. I don't drive truck much ..could that be a factor? Just trying to avoid future headaches if at possible.
TIA.

What leads you to believe that moisture is getting into the wheel ends ? what brand wheel ends did you install ?

When I removed them last week I turned them upside down so nipples were pointed down. Significant black water came out when I compressed them by hand. Its cold here so I figure it was the reason 4WD was not engaging. These were actually Motorcraft that a shop installed (at a crazy price) Seeing how I got 2 years out of them this time I went with Rock Auto ones.

I wonder how water is getting into them .. I know the IWE solenoid was a way in but, you have the rain hood. If there were an open in the line set , they would leak vacuum and not work. Have you been in deep water lately ?

Nope..truck is a grocery getter for most part. Never off road...actually almost never even off pavement.
Use to engage 4wd regularly through the summer to make sure all was good...first real cold snap and it would not engage which as I understand reinforces the moisture problem...

Did a dealership put them in? Shouldn't they be warrantied for 3/36?

Ok. I just put a wheel end in on 08. Think I paid around 50 from amauto. Ten year warranty. Bought a few parts from them now and they are all holding up so far.

Yah what burns me the most is this shop charged me $250 CAD each for the IWE's!.
Two years later and I am stuck fixing it again.

Yeah. They aren't that hard to do. Definitely worth spending just the 50 and doing the work yourself. Lots of YouTube videos with different ways of doing it.
