Default Installing auto dim mirror

I bought an auto-dim rearview mirror from a Taurus and want to replace my manual mirror with it. My question is, can I splice into the power of my compass box that sits behind the mirror? I haven't received the mirror yet but assume it will have a connector on it that I will have to cut off since I don't currently have an auto-dim mirror. Any help? Thanks!

BUMP

Come on guys! Certainly someone has some input on this! On a related note, I got my mirror and failed to realize it didn't have the wiring harness with it. Now I need to find that so I can splice it in. Seems like if the truck is wired for a 4wd switch it would be wired for a power mirror???

I have been wanting to do this also, but I don't have the mirror. I have looked into new mirrors and they come with installation instructions. But I have no insight to contribute on this. Sorry.

To be safe I would probably run a power cable down to the radio. (run behind pillar through the under side of the dash to the radio ignition.) That should work.

Paitience! Without knowing what a Taurus mirror has in the way of wiring, I'll assume like any other dimming mirror, power and ground. Use a test light or Volt/Ohm meter to buze the compass wires (I don't have this feature on my STX). If you have a power and ground lead up behind the stock mirror, you'd be good to go in splicing in.

You do know how to remove the stock Ford mirror, right? They snap on the slug that is glued to the glass. A small blade screwdriver to pry up. BE CAREFULL!

idk if its any different then my standar no frills mirror on my FX4 but you DO NOT pry up at all!!....trust me on that(im on a second windshield thanks to the mechanic shop..lol)...with my mirror and im pretty sure that mirror all you have to do is go from the bottom with a flat head screw driver place it on the mirror section ONLY! and with a hammer gently tap it straight up....should be real easy to get it to come off....

okay, thanks for the input. i got the mirror but the person i bought it from forgot to send along the wiring, so i'm waiting on that to arrive before i proceed. i've pryed my headliner back already to see if there were any wires there already (other than the compass wires), and there were not. so i guess i'm going to follow Bucko's advice on testing things out and splicing into my compass. i could also easily splice into my map lights or my power rear window switch.

as far as removing the rearview, i've already had it off. it really is no sweat if you use common sense. i used a knife to gently pry up the bottom edge of the retainer and wiggled the mirror up and off. i'm having more trouble getting it back on all the way. i'm afraid to use too much force and it doesn't seem to want to slide down enough. there's really not room to use a hammer or other object to tap it down either. for now i've just got it down as far as i could go, since i'll be removing it again soon.

any other insight will be appreciated. i'll be sure to let everyone know how it turns out.
