Default Ashtray removal for storage

Is there a way to make use of the ashtray part? Maybe remove the unit and get a storage container or something. It a large space thats useless for me right now.

I saw one pic where the guy had 3 gauges in there. It looked really cool. Nicer than the pillar but I have yet to find where to get the replacement piece.

I use mine for coin storage. I don't ever use them for drinks because not only do I not allow eating/drinking in my vehicles, but also I have the center console cupholders and they are alot sturdier albiet smaller.

I was hoping on mounting the brake controller there, but that didn't work out very well since I couldn't figure out how to get the cover out. now that's mounted beside my left knee instead.
