Default How hard is it to replace the Power Steering Pump?

Been searching for a few days now that I had a line rust out on the truck. Since the pump is fairly crusty itself I ordered a Reman Pump (with pulley) and I hope all the lines rather then mess with trying to pry crusty lines out.

Transmission lines are in similar shape so I'll be doing them next hopefully before they spring a leak.

But what do I really need to get the old pump off? Rather get it off in one so i can get my core charge back but if its way easier force it off then say pull the pulley that I won't need I'll eat the core charge in that case.

I figure the fan has to come off and the fan shroud to get better access to everything. But not sure on the details from there.

So any suggestions or how to I missed would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You have to get the pulley off. You can rent the tool from autozone, advance, etc. If you have four bolts, the top two can be done from the top of the motor, the others from below. Have a lot of extensions, swivels, beer, and smokes on hand. You will find one bolt almost impossible to get at. A small open end wrench, and a thousand tiny little turns will get it off.
And remeber....have fun.

just did it myself....get a reversible 10mm racheting wrench. I only had three bolts holding mine..i didn't take the pulley off. if yours has four bolts..the one could be a nightmare getting out with the pulley in the road. My suggestion on this job....if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The fan and shroud are the only things in the way.
The pulley is in the way of removing the pressure line, and the line is in the way of removing one of the bolts. The bolts can be loosened from the block with the pulley on, but not removed from the pump. If I remember correctly, you can access the pressure line with the pump off of the truck, but it's going to be easier to remove the pulley, line, and bolt with the pump still attached to the truck. Hopefully that makes sense.
On installation of the new pump, if you don't want to remove the new pulley, put the bolt on the pump and then install the pressure line while the pump is outside of the truck.
Don't forget these trucks use transmission fluid in the power steering system.

Parts should be here in a few days.

I would leave the pump but is NASTY with rust so I figure save myself the future headache and replace it now.

Hopefully I can knock it out over the weekend then start trying to figure out the transmission lines. Might be stuck going to the dealer for those.

Thanks!

Finally it works.

Since I dont feel like typing it all out again for a 3rd time.

The pump is coming off in chunks and I have started dremeling into the mounts and bolts since they are crusty as well.

Seems like all the rust on the truck decided to party on the transmission lines, and power steering and pump.

Hopefully a little more cutting as room permits and a BFH and I can get rid of the rusticle impersonating a power steering pump.

I'll see if I can get any clear ones in the morning.

Hopefully with the pump off but somehow I expect it to fight some more.

Yeah, pics would be awesome. So I assume your new pump will have a new pulley? As others have said, you do NOT need to get the pulley off to take off or put on the pump.
